As a term derived from Latin, the word “university” means “community of teachers and scholars.” Each university is indeed a unique community with its own culture, traditions, and history. These following universities are not only big in size but well-known for their own reason.
1. Columbia University
Being one of the colonial colleges means having a long history and unimaginable wealth, Columbia is the second biggest landowner in New York. Rockefeller Center was built on the land that was once owned by Columbia.
Columbia has the most "photogenic" classroom. Columbia’s Havemeyer 309 lecture hall is home to the most Hollywood movies, like Spiderman, Kinsey, Ghostbusters, Mona Lisa’s Smile.
As one of the oldest North American universities, Columbia can be a bit old-school though. From 1975 to 2016, the Columbia University Marching Band entertained students at the "orgo night" which is the midnight on the day of the Organic Chemistry exam. Sadly, "orgo night" is still being banned as of today.
2. George Washington University
Originally named Columbia College, GWU's name was changed to Columbian University. It was finally to the George Washington University in 1904, in honor of the president. So confusing!
Being in the political capital of the nation means valuable political resources are at students' disposal. The moot court competitions at GWU are frequently judged by sitting and retired Justices of the US Supreme Court.
Politics = power. At least 17 GWU alumni have been on the cover of Time Magazine over the years.
3. California State University, San Bernardino
Moving away from urban cities like New York or Washington, CSUSB has very refreshing landscapes. It is built atop on its city's bedrock and framed to the north by the San Bernardino Mountains.
While located in a somewhat secluded area, its business school is surprisingly good! In 2012, CSUSB was one of only four U.S. institutions and 18 in the world designated as Most Innovative Business Colleges by European CEO Magazine.
Diversity exists in CSUSB; it has the third highest Hispanic and African American student population of any university in California.
4. George Mason University
Each spring, student organizations at Mason compete to paint one of the 38 benches in front of the Library, just for fun!
The school, on the other hand, offers more than fun activities but global opportunities.Mason has four campuses with one campus in South Korea, within the Incheon Free Economic Zone of the Songdo region.
The faculty is outstanding - Mason faculty have twice won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics.
This concludes our College Facts May 2018! Wish you a happy and productive summer!
