As a term derived from Latin, the word “university” means “community of teachers and scholars.” Each university is indeed a unique community with its own culture, traditions, and history. This month, the featured universities all have a very interesting history.

1. Michigan State University

Let's start with the name of MSU... The University went through 6 name changes before finally landing on its name today in 1964.

Thanks to its long history, MSU doesn't lack talented and famous alumni. Magic Johnson played for MSU for two years and led them to the 1979 NCAA Championship victory.

The University does indeed strive to solve the world's most challenging problem.  Michigan State University offers an online zombie apocalypse survival class. Students will learn how to survive the catastrophic event, escape death, and preserve future civilization! Quite a lot of responsibilities!

2. McMaster University

McMaster not only has a long history but also really cool (freaky) stuff. For example, a titan arum, commonly known as a corpse flower which smells like rotting fish is in bloom in McMaster Biology Greenhouse.

But the campus does offer something pleasant for students. Every Monday at 2 o’clock, the McMaster campus is treated to a live carillon concert, played on real bells located in the McMaster Divinity College’s tower.

Finally, you won't believe what the University is proud to have. One-fifth of Einstein’s brain is floating in a jar of alcohol in a McMaster science lab.

3. Western Michigan University

WMU might not have any Einstein's brain, but they do have human flesh but in a different form. The school's first principal and president, President Waldo's remains are buried in East Hall.

Their close-knit community is also evident on campus. Most of the campus buildings and streets are named after former professors, administrators, a board of trustee members or students.

Its uniqueness also has to do with its history. WMU was originally founded to fulfill a teacher shortage and the lack of training opportunities in West Michigan.

  4. Wilfrid Laurier University

History doesn't define a university forever but it definitely affects some aspects of it. For example, Laurier used to be affiliated with Western University which was why it adopted purple in lieu of maroon.

Talking about history, Laurier is the only university in Canada named after a prime minister.

And geographically, it is huge! Laurier has offices in Waterloo, Kitchener, Brantford, Toronto and it reaches all the way to Chongqing, China!
