As a term derived from Latin, the word “university” means “community of teachers and scholars.” Each university is indeed a unique community with its own culture, traditions, and history. These following universities might have the most distinct characters so far. They absolutely have found their niche in North American higher education.
1. Cleveland State University
This public research university can trace back its historical roots to the Cleveland YMCA's free courses in the 19th century. This history explains its core philosophy - it takes pride in engaging its students as an urban university.
The University had struggled to find the mascot that best represented its personality. For many years the school mascot was the comic strip character Hägar the Horrible along with his wife Helga before it changed to Magnus.
However, CSU is not as scruffy and simplistic as its past mascot couples. The University acquired Mather mansion, a 43-room mansion which was home of the Cleveland iron-ore magnate and philanthropist, Samuel Manner.
2. University of Guelph
The University of Guelph truly commits its purpose “to improve life” really seriously! U of G is said to be one of the Canadian Universities with the best food for its Creelman Marketplace.
U of G also has quite some unique selections! The University of Guelph Library holds Canada’s Largest Cookbook and Theatre Archive collections.
However, that doesn’t mean the University is not good at research! In 2007, physicists at the University of Guelph led by professor Iain Campbell provided the first scientific evidence for the presence of water on Mars.
3. Central Michigan University
CMU carved out its own niche – the University’s online programs for veterans are ranked No. 1 in the U.S.
Its history and culture are strongly tied to Native American culture. The University's nickname "Chips" is shortened from Chippewas which is used with the consent of the nearby Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
The most popular saying in CMU is "Fire Up!" which is used to show the Chippewa enthusiasm.
4. Brock University
Brock is one of the cool kids! The University was listed in the “Huffington Post’s” list of Coolest Classes in Canada for the study of the Art of Clown-Doctoring and Wine and Winemaking.
Like school, like student. Brock students are also edgy; the students of Brock University published their very own Harlem Shake video On February 13th, 2013.
It’s no wonder that the students diligently follow the school’s motto when it comes to working and playing! Brock University's motto “Surgite” which means "push on" in Latin. It’s said to be the university's namesake, Major-General Sir Isaac Brock's last word before he died during the war of 1812.
This concludes our College Facts February 2018! Slay those midterms!
