As a term derived from Latin, the word “university” means “community of teachers and scholars.” Each university is indeed a unique community with its own culture, traditions, and history. During this midterm season, we have some refreshing facts for you to de-stress while procrastinating with Netflix. Your childhood friend whom you only see actively on Facebook might go to one of these universities!
1.University at Buffalo
Every year students compete in one of the largest collegiate mud volleyball tournaments in the United States called “Oozefest”. It seems a very unique and sticky volleyball tournament.
UB students are blessed with a chance to make history before they start gaining that freshman 15. Each fall during Opening Weekend, the incoming freshman class joins together to form the school's interlocking "UB" logo. How fun!
It might be one of few American universities founded by a president. The university was initially founded in 1846 as a private medical university by Millard Fillmore, the 13th president of the United States.
2.York University
If you are a real fan of Mean Girls, you must know that the queen B Regina George is Canadian who happened to graduate from York University.
It might give Regina a fashion crisis when she knows where their gowns are made of. York U's convocation gowns are made up of approximately 23 (500ml) plastic water bottles.
But the university is literally the greenest - it owns part of a rainforest called "Las Nubes" in Costa Rica.
3. Wayne State University
WSU had some real anxiety with their athletic team name. Their athletic teams changed their name from the "Tartars" to the "Warriors" in 1999, "due to a feeling that the Tartar name was dated and that not many people knew what a Tartar was" (thanks, Wikipedia!).
Their theatre is as special as their past athletic team name. The Hilberry Theatre is the nation's first and longest-running university graduate repertory theatre.
Even their student is one of a kind. They might have the most well-rounded alumnus ever - Michael Nicholson, the most credentialed man in modern history has obtained 29 advanced degrees and counting (at least one from WSU).
4. Carleton University
Situated in the capital of Canada, students Carleton University are basically roommates with the army. Each summer the Canadian Armed Forces use Carleton residence facilities to house and feed the Ceremonial Guard.
But don't worry, their campus is big enough to find a spot to smoke a joint. Students can walk to buildings on campus in the extensive system of underground tunnels.
But their basketball team needs to chill. In men's basketball, the Ravens have won 13 of the last 15 national men's championships.
